Ways To Save- Gardening In Egg Cartons

Photobucket

WooHoo!! We finally were able to get out and plant a few veggies this weekend and hopefully our seedlings will be ready to go in the ground very soon as well. We did get a little bit of a slow start this year with our seed planting but they will be ready soon!

We decided this year that we wanted to use more items that we would normally just throw away for our garden. One item we used this year to get our seedlings started was egg cartons. We added some dirt into each little whole and then added some seeds and water. Our girls labeled the top of the inside of the carton with which seeds they added in each whole and as they grow bigger we will then plant them in the ground!!

We have had a lot of rain in the past few weeks, but I think that my garden is still doing pretty good!! The wind knocked off one of the bell peppers over the weekend but other than that, everything else is still standing!!Here are a few pictures of what is growing this week. As you can see, we had to put the fence up. The darn rabbits were just eating too much and basically took up camp in our back yard. Since the fence went up, I have only seen 1 rabbit in the past 4 days. Maybe they got the hint!!

Can you see them? PUMPKINS!!! Last year we planted them too late and never got any, but this year, I think we will have plenty to carve and decorate with come October!!!

Lettuce is starting to sprout back through, maybe it will survive the wrath of the rabbits!!
Jalapenos!!!
Broccoli is coming back!!
Our cucumbers are trying to come back!!!
One lonely tomato!!

>Silly Rabbits, My Garden is for me!! – Link up!

>Okay, so last week while cutting our grass, we ran over a bunny nest. Fur went flying everywhere. I know what you are thinking, the bunnies are fine. It was just the fur that the mama made the nest with that went flying. I took my shoe and collected the fur and covered the hole back again.

My girls were so excited that we had bunnies in the yard. I was not so excited. We no longer have our dog and so I was excited that I could finally take down the fence around the garden this year. But I guess I was wrong. This mama bunny has eaten almost all of our lettuce and I went out today to take pictures for this post and my poor broccoli that had 8 or 9 leaves on it, is now just a stick in the ground. See what I mean! I love nature’s creatures, but my garden is my new love. Please bunny stay away, I really do not want to have to wish bad things to happen to you.

We bought a apple tree and a peach tree this weekend at Meijer. The apple tree was $9.99 and the peach tree was only $6.99. The apple tree is about 5 feet tall and the peach tree is over 6 feet. I was told that you need 2 trees to produce fruit. But do they have to be the same tree to produce the fruit? I was talking to Tosha over at Savings Makes Cents today and we were trying to figure out if I had to have 2 apple trees or is it okay to have one apple and one peach tree. Can you help me?
Here are my tomatoes and a little bit of the pumpkins. The tomatoes are doing very well, I even have a few that have flowered. So I need to stake them this week and wait for our tomatoes to start sprouting!!
Here are the black beauty bell peppers that we got. My husband and girls love bell peppers, but they say that these dark purple bell peppers are the best they ever had. Little white flowers started blooming today so these should be here soon!! I can not wait to get something from our garden!!So have your own garden that you want to share? >Herb Cans-Oh How My Garden Grows- Link Up!!

My mom’s birthday was yesterday (Happy Birthday again Mom) and I always have my girls make something for her. She never wants anything so I figure if her grand kids make it then it will mean more and she will keep it forever!!! So this year we made her a few herb cans!! They are very easy to make and of course very inexpensive!! ( I know I need a new camera- it is getting really bad!!)

First you are going to need a few things:
-Cans (we just used soup cans and vegetable cans- cleaned and air dried are best)
-Hammer
- One Nail
- Dirt
- Plant of Choice (we chose to use lavender and basil)
- Newspaper
- Decorative Paper
- Crayons (we tried markers but they smeared when we glued the paper, crayons are best)
- Bowl
- Scissors
- Paint Brush
- Bottle of Glue

First you will need to clean out your cans, peel off the label and then let dry. Next take a hammer and nail and poke holes in the bottom of the can for drainage.

Then take your decorative paper and measure out the actual width and length of the paper you will need to cover your can. Decorate your paper the way you want. My girls wrote messages to grandma, but you can draw pictures or whatever you want. Then you will need to pour your glue into a bowl, then take your paint brush and dip it into the glue. Then paint on the glue on the outside of the can. Stick the decorative paper to the can and then paint more glue over the paper. This will help get glue into the edges where the paper and can meet. Gluing the outside will help to keep the paper from getting wet when you water your plants.

Let your can dry, over night is best but a few hours will work. Once it is completely dry take a piece of newspaper and ball it up in the bottom of your can, add dirt and then add your plant. That is it, you are done!! Make sure you put these somewhere that can drain through the bottom or place something underneath if you want them inside somewhere.

Here are a few pictures of my garden this week. Here is our parsley- this stuff is growing like crazy!! Now I need to come up with some great recipes to start using it!!

Here is the carrots, lettuce and onions.
Here is the tomatoes, pumpkins, watermelon and cantaloupe!!

>The Farmer’s Garden! Oh, How My Garden Grows-Link-up!

>

Tosha over at Savings Makes Cents, had told me about a great place called The Farmer’s Garden. This is a site that is dedicated to gardeners finding other gardeners who want to share their harvest.
It is easy to use, you just add your information to their database of gardeners that want to share their produce. You can check through other gardeners and see what they have extra of and want to share. You can purchase or trade with other gardeners your produce!

Unfortunately there are not any local people from the Cincinnati Area right now but as soon as my plants start producing produce I am going to post some of mine on there. So if you are wanting to trade or sell your produce from your garden check it out and add your information!!

>Since I did not get much done with the garden this weekend due to our never ending busy schedule!! I thought I would show our Raspberry bushes that were so generously given to us by my friend Becky over at Saving Bits and Pieces!!

This will be our first year at having bushes and I am so excited!! We still need to get our Blueberry and Blackberry but I can’t wait to see some fruit sprouting. Becky had said that this year we will not see any fruit but next year we should see it!! So here is a picture of one bush, isn’t cute!!

>Things To Do This Week In Honor Of Earth Day!

>I have been writing down ideas for crafts for me and my girls to do over the summer but I thought that we would do a few this week in honor of Earth Day.

Below I have listed some of the crafts ideas that we are going to do this week and a few other Earth friendly tips you should do to help make the planet a better place!! Enjoy!

  1. Recycle- This is obvious!! If you have not started recycling with your curbside service or you do not have it yet in your community, look for drop off locations or try and get your city to have recycling service with your regular trash pickup. We have reduced our trash pickup by about 60% since we started recycling. Just about everything you use can be recycled!!
  2. Get Dirty- Get outside and start planting. You can plant a tree or flowers or plant your own garden. You can see my garden here and see it’s progress. There are so many benefits to planting- better for the Earth, cleaner air, creates shaded areas and if you are planting your own garden, fresh produce is just great. Plus is saves you money at the grocery, my favorite.
  3. Donate- Clean out your closets and donate the items that you don’t use or need anymore. Not only is it great to donate to those who are in need but it is also a tax deduction!! Plus it is great to have extra space in your closet!!
  4. Get Crafty- Make some crafts with your kids with things you already have around the house. Use items that you were going to throw out (or recycle). You can make things like; tin can herb containers, toothbrush bracelets, milk jug planters and 2 liter bug catchers. Come back later this week and see our Earth Day projects using the items I just listed. Get creative, have some fun and just enjoy time with your kids!!
  5. Get FREE Stuff- Check out Craigslist or your local Freecycle to get things for FREE. These sites are great places to find things that others do not need anymore but you can use them.
  6. Carpool- Find a friend or co-worker that works near you and carpool a few times a week. You can save money on gas and wear and tear on your car. Plus you will have someone to talk to on the way to and from work!!
  7. Mini Vacation- Go to your local National Park and enjoy Mother Nature. This week you can visit any National Park for FREE, check out the details here.
  8. Volunteer- Sign up to volunteer in your community. Even better, organize a community cleanup day!
  9. Light Bulbs- Replace your old light bulbs with energy saving bulbs. They last longer, save money on your energy bill and are better for the planet.
  10. Shopping Bags- Use reusable shopping bags when you shop. Some stores pay you to bring your own bags, Kroger .03 per bag, Marsh .05 per bag and Target .05 per bag!!
  11. Save Water- Take shorter shorter showers, fix leaks and turn the water off when you are not using it. Great for the planet but another tip that is great on your water bill as well!!
  12. Batteries- Replace your regular batteries for rechargeable batteries. The initial cost is a little more but in the long run you will buy less therefore saving you money!!
  13. Water Bottles- Stop buying bottled water and bring a reusable bottle. You can get a filtered water pitcher pretty cheap to get fresh water.
  14. Thermostat- Raising your thermostat in the summer and lowering it in the winter just a degree or 2 can save a lot of money and you will not even notice a difference!!
  15. Air Filter- Replacing or cleaning your homes air filters will help your a/c and heating unit running better and you will have fresher air in your home!!
  16. Car- Keep up on your tune ups and oil changes on your cars. This will make your car run better, better for the planet and you will have less mechanic visits for problems. Better yet park the car and walk, ride your bike or take a bus to where you need to go.
  17. Compost- Start your own compost pile to add to your new plants or garden. Here is a great way to get started in making your own compost!
  18. Save Energy- Turn off the lights when you leave a room, unplug chargers or things that you do not use all the time. Put blinds up-close the blinds in the summer to keep a room cooler and open blinds in the winter to let the warmth of the sun in!!
